Botanical research of AMKE Foundation for Cleon Tsetis at Tzoumerka

The AMKE Foundation for Cleon Tsetis, created by the OFET Group, actively supports science and the younger generation.

As part of its ongoing support and support of educational and research activities, it recently sponsored a botanical excursion to the Pharmacognosy and Natural Chemistry Laboratory of the EKPA Department of Pharmacy, led by Professor Leandros Skaltsounis. The botanical excursion took place in the Athamanian Mountains, better known as Tzoumerka. The great biodiversity of Tzoumerka have led to the incorporation of parts of the wider area into the botanical study and exploitation program of the Department of Pharmacognosy and Chemistry.

The objectives of this activity were to search for plant material of medicinal interest, to identify and record endemic and non-plant species in the southern part of the mountain. Specimens of 32 plant species were also collected with the aim of integrating them into research studies, the results of which may lead to the discovery, emergence and further exploitation of domestic flora for the production of high quality products. value added (cosmetics, nutritional supplements or even pharmaceuticals).

In this botanical excursion, which was led by Professor Leandros Skaltsounis and the expert on systematic botany Dr. Eleftherios Kalpoutzakis, participated 42 participants, mainly postgraduate students and PhD candidates of the Department of Pharmacy of the University of Athens, professors, foreign researchers and other associates.

The Cleon Tsetis Foundation actively supports science and the younger generation and implements actions aimed at upgrading the infrastructure of the country's educational institutions.
In this context, the renovation of two open air spaces with aromatic and medicinal plants in the NCSR - the university's Department of Pharmacognosy and Chemistry - is also part of the renovation, with the aim of enhancing the work of the academic community and upgrading the level of education of young scientists.

Note, as recently pointed out by the President and Managing Director of the OFET Group, Ms. Julia Tsetis, receiving an award at the DIAMONDS OF THE GREEK ECONOMY 2019 event - on 10 July 2019 - the Group plans to launch a 4th unit Extracts of medicinal plants and will also function as a Research Institute for students and young scientists.
